Why use removable disk drive backup?

Highly Reliable Systems is proud to bring you a series of Hard Drive Backup products to give you a new comfort level with the “restorability” of your network data. Forget Disk to Disk to Tape (D2D2T). Our multi-drive models give the same functionality as “robotic” tape libraries – at a fraction of the price. At Highly Reliable Systems we believe a good backup device should have some or all of the following features to accommodate a solid backup strategy:

1. The Backup Media can be easily transported off site.
2. The Backup Media should be extremely cheap per Gigabyte of storage.
3. The entire network backup should ideally fit onto one removable media so it can be done at night unattended.
4. The Backup process should be fast.
5. Multiple media should be used so that a history of data can be maintained over a period of time.
6. The backup drive itself should be reasonably priced.
7. The data should be available to restore immediately using "random access" to any file.
8. The backup should have a long "shelf life".
9. Backup media should be transportable and usable in a wide variety of systems.
10. The Backup media should be readily available.

 Unfortunately, in today's market, tape devices don't give us all of the features on the list above. While inexpensive tape drives do exist, more reliable tape drives are expensive. We argue that "truly" reliable tape drives don't exist at a reasonable price. Tapes are a "streaming" media, and unlike hard drives which are "random access", tapes require fast forwarding or rewinding to get to individual files. This process is time consuming and fraught with errors.
